Description

The Mahabodhi Temple literally meaning is"Great Awakening Temple", a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is ancient, but much rebuilt and restored, It is the Buddhist temple in Bodh Gaya, marking the location where the Buddha is said to have achieved enlightenment. Bodh Gaya is in Gaya district is about 96 km from Patna, Bihar state, India.

History

Construction - In approximately 250 BCE, Buddhist Emperor Asoka visited Bodh Gaya in order to establish a monastery and shrine on the holy site, which has today disappeared. At this place Buddha attained Enlightenment so Gaya city is known as the land of Enlightenment.
